Dirk Victor Caluwaerts is een eigentijds romanticus. Op zoek naar een reservaat van schoonheid in een vergiftigde wereld doolt hij ’s nachts door desolate steden en onontgonnen innerlijke landschappen. Zijn doeken zijn ultieme toevluchtsoorden. Ze ademen eenzaamheid en melancholie, maar ook het onvergankelijke verlangen naar wat Michel Houellebecq ‘ de mogelijkheid van een eiland’ noemde. Naar ‘de liefde, waarin alles eenvoudig is, waarin alles in het moment gegeven is.   Caluwaerts lijkt doordrongen van het besef dat er iets onherroepelijk stuk is. Woest maakt hij in de onderlagen van zijn doeken de pijn voelbaar die rest wanneer de natuur is verminkt en de menselijke resonantie lijkt te zijn verdwenen. Ondanks de hardheid en beladenheid van zijn thema’s overheerst echter zelden de somberheid. Zelfs in zijn zwarten gaat er een waaier aan kleuren schuil. De hoop die spreekt uit deze liefdevolle zoektocht naar kleur, treedt ook inhoudelijk op de voorgrond.

The way Caluwaerts richly treats his inner landscapes is never anecdotal. For him, the pure but fragile beauty of this earth offers the insight that ugliness and beauty, pain and happiness are inseparable. Or as guitarist Frusciante so beautifully puts it, "Through art you can be a better mirror of nature.

'Stay true to the earth,' Nietzsche's prophet Zarathustra advised man who feels displaced. Let that be exactly what Caluwaerts does in his paintings. With thin threads, he knots back together what society has broken. Despite the compelling solitude of his enterprise, he continues to attempt to undo the inorganic human actions and restore natural coherence.  The frame of a painting appears to serve only to reconcile inside and outside, man and nature. 

However broken his living environment seems, Caluwaerts remains committed to what he considers a human need for life: to capture beauty. Not coincidentally, he portrays himself as a grown man trying to catch snowflakes with a butterfly net. By keeping the idyll alive, Caluwaerts fuels his dream of an island on which he can survive as a human being.
